commercial Internet exchange (CIX)

Commercial Internet Exchange (CIX) is the term used to describe Internet nodes where the network crossings of the various commercial Internet operators are connected to the Internet backbone.

The interconnection of the operator networks of the Internet Service Providers(ISPs) forms a commercially oriented Internet as it is today.

The goal of these Internet nodes, the Internet Exchange Points( IXP), is to make the Internet independent of the influence of the U.S. government and to establish its own rules of use. Internet nodes exist at international, European and national level. Internationally, they are called Commercial Internet Exchange (CIX), the European Internet node is called European Commercial Internet Exchange (ECIX) and the German Internet node, located in Frankfurt/Main, is called German Commercial Internet Exchange( DE-CIX). All operator interconnection nodes are maintained by corresponding organizations.
