compact PCI (CPCI)

CompactPCI (CPCI) is the industrial version of the parallel PCI bus introduced in the USA in 1995 and standardized by PICMG.

The CompactPCI bus is a high- performance bus system used in industrial computers and their backplanes. The data rate is max. 528 MB/s for the 32-bit bus. The electrical characteristics correspond to the PCI bus known from the PC world, the mechanical specifications have been adapted to the format of the 3U and 6U Eurocards.

The CompactPCI specification according to the PICMG standard 2.0 limits the number of slots in a CompactPCI system to eight. The eight slots are made up of one system slot and seven peripheral slots. The system slot handles arbitration, clock signal distribution and reset functions for all slots. Larger CPCI systems with more than eight slots use multiple CPCI bus segments interconnected by PCI-PCI bridges.

CompactPCI uses a special shielded 7-row connector with 47 pin rows in a 2 mm pitch. Features of this connector include a coding key to distinguish between 5 V and 3.3 V supplies, hot- swap and over 100 ground contacts.

CompactPCI is also available in the CompactPCI Express version as a serial, scalable bus. However, it is not directly compatible with this because it requires bridge slots. For this purpose, CompactPCI Plus has been defined, which operates with a passive backplane and via whose peripheral slot the PCI Express, Serial ATA( SATA), USB interface and Ethernet are routed.

The standards for the CPCI bus are developed by the PCI Industrial Computer Manufacturers Group (PICMG). They are a combination of the electrical and logical specifications of the PCI bus and the mechanical specifications according to IEEE 1101 and IEC 60297.
