compact hypertext markup language (CHTML)

Compact HyperText Markup Language (cHTML) is a subset of Hypertext Markup Language(HTML) for mobile devices. cHTML was developed by the W3C consortium in the 1990s and has a limited feature set.

CHTML is designed for smaller memories, central processing units with lower performance, monochromatic displays, a font and limited input options. Only the GIF format is available for graphic representations. It has limited display options. Thus, table display, image maps, background colors and images, and stylesheets are not supported.

CHTML has a limited command set and can interpret many commands and tags of HTML. This allows normal web pages to be adopted for display on mobile devices with few changes. cHTML was and is used in cell phones, PDAs and older smartphones.
