companion specification for energy metering (smart meter) (COSEM)

Companion Specification for Energy Metering (COSEM) is a rule set for smartmeter data exchange that builds on existing standards and uses the Device Language Message Specification( DLMS).

COSEM serves as an interface model for smart meter communication and represents the functionality at the communication interface. In the COSEM concept, each individual device is globally identified by its unique logical device name, the OBIS identification number, Object Identification System (OBIS). Information from the logical entities is formed by interface objects, and access to the interface objects is provided by so-called association objects. The latter contain the information about the available resources within the logical units in the existing context, depending on the access rights.

The Interface Objects are specific to the domains of measurement and are based on known concepts such as registers, polling registers, profiles, clock rates, and so on. In addition, there are the Association Objects that take care of access control and configure the transmission channel.
