compression control protocol (CCP)

The Compression Control Protocol(CCP) is a Layer 3 protocol used in conjunction with the Point to Point Protocol( PPP).

The CCP protocol negotiates the compression method used between the communication partners. It is responsible for the configuration and the compression algorithm used on both sides of the PPP connection. In addition, the CCP protocol detects errors in compression and decompression. The data compression algorithms are entered in the CCP option type field.

Only one CCP data packet is encapsulated in the PPP protocolinformation field at a time, identified by the hex value 80FD. The data compression algorithms are entered in the CCP Option type field.

The CCP protocol uses the same type of data packet switching as the Link Control Protocol( LCP) and is described in RFC 1962 from 1996.
