compromising emission

Wherever electricity flows, during the operation of monitors and computers, private branch exchanges and fax machines, and during signal transmissionvia data cables and in WLANs, electromagnetic fields occur that can be selected and detected with suitable receiving devices.

In information security, these interfering radiations that contain relevant information are referred to as compromising emissions (KEM) or exposing radiation. Depending on the level of the compromising emissions, these interfering beams can still be received and evaluated at distances of over a hundred meters.

To make it more difficult for unauthorized persons to receive such KEM signals, the KEM signals can be superimposed with a stronger interfering signal, improved shielding of devices, systems and data cables can be provided, or even entire rooms can be made RF-tight, for example as a Faraday cage.
