content management interoperability services (OASIS) (CMIS)

In order to standardize access to mostly proprietary content repositories of Content Management Systems( CMS) and Enterprise Content Management Systems( ECMS), the OASIS standardized the specifications for Content Management Interoperability Services ( CMIS) developed by well-known companies in the software and ECM industry in 2010. The companies that have been actively working on corresponding specifications since 2007 include IBM, EMC, Microsoft, Oracle, SAP and many others.

The aim of CMIS activities is to be able to use the wide variety of document management systems used in companies and their documents both within and across companies. Since different company divisions usually also use different DMS systems that meet their requirements, the documents cannot yet be made available to other company divisions, or only with considerable additional effort. The same applies to subsidiaries, suppliers and other vendors. For this reason, the cross-divisional use of document archives brings considerable advantages.

Content Management Interoperability Services (CMIS) forms the means of transport and stands for various web services that use Simple Object Access Protocol ( SOAP) and Representational State Transfer( REST ) as their communication protocols. CMIS facilitates the introduction and integration of ECM systems, it offers the migration of existing repositories and can be operated on the existing systems. The CMIS standard allows vendors to implement CMIS in their own products, eliminating existing interoperability in enterprise content management and document management systems. The CMIS model governs the relationships between the document and its content, the folder with its containers and metadata, the relationships between the document source and destination, and the actual policies.
