control and user plane separation (5G) (CUPS)

Control and User Plane Separation (CUPS) is a core function of the 5th generation (5G) mobile network infrastructure core network. This core function of the Evolved Packet Core( EPG) represents an architectural enhancement.

CUPS separation provides separation of functionality in the Evolved Packet Core's Serving Gateway( SGW), PDN Gateway ( PGW), and Traffic Detection Function( TDF), enabling flexible network deployment and operation without impacting the functionality of existing nodes.

CUPS reduces latency for applications, it supports increased traffic, allows independent localization and scaling ofcontrol plane and user plane resources, and enables Software Defined Networking for more efficient provisioning of user data.
