converged network adapter (FC) (CNA)

Converged Network Adapters (CNA) are converging network adapters used to connect storage area networks ( SAN) with local area networks( LAN).

Conceptually, it is a network interface card( NIC) with a hostbus adapter( HBA) for Fibre Channel( FC) and for Ethernet and TCP/ IP. The connection is made through a dedicated 10 Gbps switch that supports both Converged Enhanced Ethernet( CEE) and Fibre Channel over Ethernet( FCoE). LAN and Fibre Channel traffic can be carried over a fiber optic cable between the adapter and the switch.

Converged Network Adapters (CNA) are used in Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) and have the advantage that the server only needs to be equipped with a CNA card and thus has access to the local network and the storage network.
