convergence platform

A convergence platform is the central component for service integration in IP networks. It opens up numerous additional migration paths and enables the economical integration of diverse communications services for voice and data via the IP protocol.

The convergence platform takes over the function of the PBX in classic telephone networks, including the connection of existing fixed lines, radio links and other network configurations such as TDM technology, ATM or IP networks. The basis of each convergence platform is a high- availability switch that can interconnect up to several thousand subscriber lines and network connections, depending on the communications infrastructure. A control unit takes over connection control.
