core gateway

Core gateways connect autonomous systems(AS) with each other in IP networks. For communication with other autonomous systems, core gateways use the EGP protocol.

Before two autonomous systems can communicate with each other, a core gateway in one autonomous system sends requests regarding reachability to a gateway in another autonomous system.

Core gateway systems form the central part of Internet routing in which all groups must indicate their routes to their networks, for which they use the Exterior Gateway Protocol (EGP).
