critical distance

The term critical distance is used in audio engineering. It is the distance from the sound source at which the direct sound and the reverberation sound have the same volume. The critical distance varies depending on the room. In an anechoic room with absorbing walls, the critical distance is farther from the sound source than in a room with reverberation, where it is closer to the sound source.
