cross interleaved Reed Solomon code (CIRC)

Cross Interleaved Reed Solomon Code (CIRC) is an error correction method developed specifically for compact discs(CDs) and evolved from the Reed Solomon Code.

CIRC is specified in the Red Book. In the CIRC correction method, errors are detected by interleaving data and adding parity bits.

The general bit error rate( BER) for compact discs is between `10^-5` to `10^-6`. The subsequent Cross Interleaved Reed Solomon code reduces this error rate to `10^-10` to `10^-11`. This corresponds to about one bit error per gigabyte.
