crossbar switch (WAN) (CB)

  1. The crossbar switch( CB), coordinate switch (KS), is an electromechanical switch used in circuit-switched telephone exchanges that uses electronically controlled armatures to connect vertical and horizontal lines. This technology dates back to the 1930s, but is still used in some telephone exchanges. The cross-bar switch is an alternative to the standard strowger lift dialer.
  2. Cross-bar switches are used in the mainframe world and switch channels between the host and the storage system. These switches are also referred to as core switches.
  3. Crossbar switches are also used in audio and video studio equipment, as audio and video crossbars. They can be used to connect different audio and video devices with their inputs and outputs. This applies equally to analog and digital audio and video signals. In order to achieve optimum interference voltage suppression, crossbar distributors (KSV) are symmetrically constructed and can have matching components for level or impedance matching. In contrast to a patch panel, a crossbar distributor can be used to connect one output to several inputs. With a patch panel, on the other hand, only one output is ever connected to one input.
