current loop interface

The current loop interface a standardized interface for the local area according to DIN 66258. Instead of the otherwise usual voltage level, the binary information is emulated by current or no current.

The currents of the current loop interface are 20 mA, 40 mA and 60 mA. The coupling of computer to peripheral devices is done by one transmit and one receive loop each, over which a constant current flows. With a pair of twisted copper wires, distances of up to more than 1,000 m can be bridged at data rates of up to 9,600 bit/s with a high degree of interference immunity.

Because of the specified current levels, the current loop interface is also known as the 20 mA interface.
