In a data breach, sensitive, proprietary or confidential data is read, stolen or used by unauthorized persons for their own purposes.

It can be PersonalHealthInformation( PHI), Personally Identifiable Information ( PII), or access data for accounts and banking transactions. Most often, such data is stolen by hackers who have gained unauthorized access into a network or personal computer, or by employees who have access to personal information.

Business organizations and governments have enacted various policies and laws that restrict the misuse of personal data. These include credit card organizations that use security standards to regulate the secure use of credit cards, as well as insurance companies that regulate the handling of social security numbers, health information, and other sensitive data. Specialized Breach Detection Systems( BDS) are used in companies to detect data breaches.
