digital audio and video council (DAVIC)

DigitalAudio and Video Council (DAVIC) is an international organization that creates specifications for interactive services related to digital TV. This concerns in particular the interactive use of broadband cable networks(BK) between server and set-top box.

Since worldwide standardization activities are taking place for cable distribution networks, which are not coordinated, Davic tries to specify tools for specific tasks and to influence the independently working institutions of ISO, the International Electrotechnical Commission( IEC) and the International Telecommunication Union( ITU) accordingly, so that these tools can be used in all systems.

There are several Davic specifications. Davic 1.0, dating from 1995, Davic 1.1 and 1.2 from 1996, specified cable modems for data and audiovisual services, while Davic 1.3 and following specified digital TV, interactive digital TV and telephone services. For example, Davic also contributed to the specifications for DVB-RCC, which standardized a return channel for broadband cable networks.
