digital negative (DNG)

Raw data from digital cameras has a greater dynamic range and color gamut than compressed digital photos. Therefore, RAW data is also used in image processing of digital photos.

RAW formats do not have a uniform file format, these are manufacturer and camera dependent. In addition, not all raw data can be read by corresponding software tools. These disadvantages, which are an important aspect for archiving, are eliminated by the DNG(Digital Negative) file format.

The DNG format from Adobe is an open archiving format for raw data from digital cameras. Since there are no uniform file formats for raw data, the DNG format is intended to act as a quasi- standard. It is supported by several camera and software manufacturers and runs on personalcomputers(PCs) and Macs. In addition to secure long-term archiving, image processing is also possible with the appropriate graphics programs.
