digital satellite system (DSS)

The term Digital Satellite System(DSS) originated in the 1990s and encompasses digital satellite communications in which digital signals are transmitted from the satellite via Direct Broadcast Satellite( DBS) to the receiving equipment and devices.

Today, the term Digital Satellite System stands for satellite-based digital TVDVB-S in its various forms, for digital broadcasting, digital audio broadcasting, S-DAB, and for broadband Internet connections via satellite.

Digital Satellite Systems operate as Very Small Aperture Terminals( VSAT) and can communicate with the satellite using small antenna dishes and line-of-sight. They have various advantages over cable distribution networks because they are operated by the user and are therefore not subject to the regulations of cable networks. This also allows them to be used more flexibly. This also applies to the decoding of digital signals, without it being possible for third parties to intercept them.
