direct injection (audio) (DI)

Direct Injection(DI) concerns the sound pickup from musical instruments. The audio signal from musical instruments can be picked up indirectly via microphones, but it can also be picked up from the musical instrument via sensors and transmitted to the audio hardware via cables.

Since the audio pickup is unbalanced, the audio signals are also transmitted to the audio equipment via unbalanced cables. In contrast to balanced cables, unbalanced cables have the disadvantage that radiated interference signals cannot be compensated at the amplifier and do not offer common- mode rejection.

For this reason, Direct Injection (DI) converts the unbalanced signals into balanced signals in a so-called DI box. In addition to the signal conversion, which is performed by a transformer and can provide potential isolation, the DI box also performs impedance matching to the audio input impedance of the audio equipment.

DI boxes are used wherever unbalanced output signals from a sound recorder or electronic musical instrument need to be connected to the balanced inputs of mixing consoles or audio interfaces.
