display identification (DisplayID)

Display Identification (DisplayID) is an improved identification for displays than the older Extended Display Identification Data( EDID).

DisplayID is targeted at digital displays, consumer electronics displays and embedded displays and contains detailed information about the connected display. The detailed information can be used to set the optimal display parameters.

The DisplayID data is queried at the video interface. They are individual data blocks of variable length that can be combined as function blocks. Each data block contains self-contained information, for example about the display technology, the manufacturer, the resolutions, frame rates and interfaces. With low information depth, the data blocks are only a few bytes long.

The DisplayID is stored in the EEPROM of the display and queried via the I2C bus.
