distributed component object model (DCOM)

The Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM) is an object model developed by Microsoft for the distribution of software components in networks.

The DCOM model extends the Component Object Model( COM)- It identifies the individual components, their methods and clarifies how they are addressed. In addition, DCOM describes how the COM interfaces can be interconnected across arbitrary networks using Internet protocols such as HTTP. The DCOM model helps clients download software components from the server. The individual components are invoked via a remote procedure call( RPC) and can communicate with each other over the network. The distributed object-oriented architecture provides interoperability and provides the basis for communication ofobjects on different servers and clients.

DCOM is part of Windows and works with ActiveX. JavaApplets and other applications of Object Linking and Embedding( OLE).
