distributed virtual switching (edge virtualization) (DVS)

Virtualization refers not only to computers, servers, storage and operating systems, but also to network technology.

In the case of networks, it is about the virtualization of network edges and bridging, but in particular about the virtualization of switches, also known as vSwitches. There are several technical approaches to virtual switch administration that improve security and increase scalability.

Distributed Virtual Switching( DVS) is a technical approach in which the control plane and the data plane of a virtual switch are decoupled. This decoupling makes it possible to monitor and control the data planes of several virtual switches completely independently from a management system. In this case, the management system takes over the functions of the control plane.

Techniques for Distributed Virtual Switching are being addressed in IEEE working groups, but it is not yet standardized. The Open Virtualization Format( OVF) is recommended for the DVS metadata.
