document architecture

A document architecture is a structure model for electronically stored documents.

The document structure model is used to exchange stored documents between end devices and to process them further at the recipient. This requires standardization of the document architecture as well as the content formats and exchange formats used, which is given with the open OSI-based Open Document Architecture( ODA) and with Open Document Interchange Format( ODIF). In addition, there are proprietary, manufacturer-specific architectures such as IBM's Document Content Architecture( DCA) and Document Interchange Architecture (DIA).
