dynamic multipoint VPN (DMVPN)

A DMVPN network, Dynamic Multipoint Virtual Private Network, is a virtual private network( VPN) with a meshed structure in which the data traffic between the end devices does not pass through the central routers, servers and switches.

While in classical VPN networks the remote terminals are connected to the central office, the DMVPN network has a meshed structure in which each individual terminal can be connected to any other terminal via public wide area networks or the Internet. This technique shortens latency and reduces jitter.

DMVPN networks use various well-known mechanisms such as the GRE protocol for tunneling, the IPsec protocol for encryption, and the Next Hop Resolution Protocol( NHRP). These protocols reduce administrative overhead and provide reliable dynamic connections between endpoints.
