echo protocol

The echo protocol is used for debugging and testing purposes. It sends all received data back to the sender. By comparing the returned data with the original data, the sender can check that the data connection is error-free. The echo protocol is defined in RFC 862.

An implementation of an echo protocol is the Packet Internet Groper ( PING) used in the Internet Control Message Protocol( ICMP).
