edge server

An edge server is an edge device. It is an intelligent unit that resides at the edge of the network between two networks, usually between a public network and a corporate network, or an intranet.

Edge servers have comparable functions to Fog computers. They are used in edge computing to collect, analyze and process data gathered by IoT components- which can be sensors, vision sensors and actuators. Depending on the application, they can perform security-related and application-related tasks. For example, acting as a firewall, edge router or edge gateway, load balancing on transmission links, or data collection and reduction from the IoT components.

The performance of embedded edge servers is enormous and can only be adequately served with line-capable modules such as COM-Express and COM-HPC. Even COM Express, with its 440 pins, does not have enough interfaces for powerful edge servers.
