electronically stored information (ESI)

Electronically Stored Information(ESI) is the generic term for all electronically stored information, regardless of the type of information and the format in which it was created or captured.

Electronically Stored Information can be text documents, spreadsheets, formulas, graphics, photos, audio or video, as well as short messages, voice mails, database content and any kind of messaging. Whereby many of the mentioned documents are subject to secrecy.

Electronically Stored Information is stored on familiar storage media such as magnetic tapes, hard disks, solid state drives, CDs, DVDs and flash memory. The search and retrieval of these documents is done by means of Electronic Discovery, E-Discovery.
