encrypting PIN pad (ATM) (EPP)

An Encrypting PIN Pad(EPP) is a special keypad in ATMs and POS terminals that encrypts the bank customer's personal identification number (PIN) entered via the keypad.

Encrypting the personal identification number ensures that the unencrypted PIN is not used in the system and can be tapped or manipulated by hackers or otherwise. The EPP circuit is an encryption component consisting of a microprocessor and a memory unit that forms a single unit with the keypad. An alternative to the microprocessor is an application-specific ASIC.
