The German Institute for Standardization (Deutsches Institut für Normung e.V.).(DIN) has dealt with the basic terms of metrology in DIN 1319, including the term test.
Testing involves determining the extent to which a test object fulfills specified characteristics. Testing can be performed subjectively by looking at the object, or objectively by qualitative measurements of the object properties.
The purpose of testing is to determine whether the object or measurement sample meets the designated manufacturer's specifications, characteristics, functions, or accuracy requirements.
Like measurement, calibration and adjustment, testing is one of the basic metrological functions.
