excess information rate (FR) (EIR)

The term Excess Information Rate (EIR) is used in various techniques for excess data. For example, in Frame Relay( FR), in service networks and in Metro Ethernet networks( MEN).

  1. The Excess Information Rate (EIR) is the data rate of Frame Relay at which data is no longer accepted in the event of network congestion. This data rate is between the nominal data rate and the committed information rate( CIR).
  2. The Excess Information Rate can also mean the network capacity provided for a subscriber in a service network.
  3. In Metro Ethernet networks, the Excess Information Rate (EIR) specifies the average data rate allowed in provider networks. This refers to service frames whose data rate is greater than the committed information rate (CIR).
