With the files to be output for color separation, light-sensitive film material is exposed, which serves as a preliminary stage for printing. Compared to a laser printer, with which it is comparable, an imagesetter is characterized by a considerably higher resolution. For pure text output, this is around 1,200 dpi; for photos, it is more than twice as high, with values of 2,500 dpi. Imagesetters generally use Postscript as the file format.
