extended binary coded decimal (EBCD)

Extended Binary Coded Decimal (EBCD) is a character code consisting of six data bits and one parity bit, which was developed by Hollerith and applied in punch cards. Hence the name 6-bit code.

Coding scheme for the EBCD code

EBCD differs from Binary Coded Decimal ( BCD) by the use of additional zones and non- standard punch combinations.
