extended service set (WLAN) (ESS)
The Extended Service Set(ESS) is a coupling of two or more radio cells of a WLAN, the Basic Service Sets( BSS), to form a larger radio network.
When several radio cells are coupled, the correct assignment of the network stations to a Basic Service Set and the transition from this to the Extended Service Set play an important role. An Extended Service Set is characterized by a uniform Service Set Identification( SSID) in which all WLAN stations use the same WLAN name.
Basic Service Sets and Extended Service Sets are normally implemented via the existing local network, typically an Ethernet. In mesh networks, the access points are connected to each other using radio technology.
