extended service set identification (WLAN) (ESSID)

Extended Service Set Identification (ESSID) is an extended service set identification( SSID) used in infrastructure WLANs.

WLANs according to 802.11 work with wireless access points( WAP) in contrast to ad hoc networks.

The ESSID identification is a key for access control of the subscribers of a WLAN. The ESSID is entered by the administrator in all mobile subscribers and all access points and shows the access rights of the client, but not its identification.
