extremely high frequency (EHF)

The EHF (Extremely High Frequency) frequency range is between 30 GHz and 300 GHz. These are millimeter waves with wavelengths between 1 cm and 1 mm.

Certain frequency ranges around 20 GHz are used for inter- satellite links, for mobile and fixed radio services and traffic telematics. Frequencies above 25 GHz are used as transmission frequencies for telematics radio, radio motion detectors and amateur radio, and frequencies above 30 GHz are used for military applications, as well as for time signal services, fixed radio, mobile radio and navigation radio services.

The 60 GHz band is receiving special attention for use for high-speed WLANs with data rates of up to 5 Gbps. For this purpose, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission( FCC) has made the frequency range between 57 GHz and 64 GHz available for license-free use.

The ITU band number of the EHF band is 11, which is directly related to the frequency range: 0.3 x 10exp(11) for the lower EHF frequency. Electromagnetic radiation above 300 GHz is so strongly attenuated by the earth's atmosphere that it cannot penetrate it. Therefore, transmission in this range is done with light.
