The Central Telecommunications Office (FTZ) in Darmstadt is a central authority of Deutsche Telekom and is responsible for the quantitative and qualitative improvement and further development of the telecommunications infrastructure in Germany. The FTZ is responsible for the development, planning and technical design of new teleservices for the transmission of voice, data, text and images. Prior to the establishment of the ZZF, Central Office for Approvals in Telecommunications, in 1982, the FTZ was responsible for issuing approvals (FTZ approval numbers) for equipment to be connected to public telecommunications networks as data stations.

Since 1995, the FTZ has consisted of several independent operating divisions dedicated to a wide variety of technologies and tasks.
