field replaceable unit (FRU)

A Field Replaceable Unit (FRU) is a replacement unit ( RU) that can be replaced "on site". The system or device does not have to be sent to the workshop or to the manufacturer for repair. FRU units can be replaced either by the customer or by a specialist. Typical Field Replaceable Units include power supplies, plug-in cards and chassis components.
