file attribute

File attributes are the properties of files. These attributes assigned to the files determine how the file is treated by the operating system. There are several attributes that relate to the protection and access rights of the file, for example through passwords. In addition, there are several flags and short data fields that can be used to control special properties. The time allocation for the creation, modification or copying of files also belong to the file attributes.

Important file attributes are the file size, the file format, the date of creation, the date of last modification and the date of last access, write or copy protection, the date of last copy and the date of last modification, hidden and compressed files and files that can only be read but not overwritten.

Other file attributes include file access rights, password, author and owner, system flag to identify normal and system files, ASCII/ binary flag to identify ASCII and binary files, random or sequential access flag, record length, key position and key length, and some other attributes.

Which file attributes are captured depends entirely on the operating system through which they are accessed. In Windows, this is done by right-clicking the file and calling the Properties field in the context menu.
