The Flash Translation Layer (FTL) is a layer in a flash memory that performs various functions for data storage.

For example, the FTL layer ensures that new and updated data is written to an empty memory location and requests are directed to the new memory address. In addition, the FTL layer ensures that newly programmed pages are distributed evenly across the flash memory and a list is created for the invalid pages.
