full disk encryption (FDE)

Full Disk Encryption(FDE) stands for the data encryption of an entire hard disk used for booting a computer.

With this encryption, all boot data and the operating system are encrypted. Access to the encrypted data is possible only after successful authentication by the authentication key.

With hard disk encryption all files are encrypted, even the operating system. Encryption is performed directly when writing the data. Decryption takes place when the data is read. FDE encryption is advantageous for laptops and notebooks because the data cannot be read even if the device is stolen.
