gate array
A gate array is a complex, pre-assembled logic circuit whose logics and gates are linked together in a customer-specific manner.
Most of the manufacturing steps of a gate array are customer-independent and standardized to a certain extent. For example, the location of the various gate circuits, AND gates, OR g ates or XOR gates, I/O pads, flip-flops, shift registers, etc. is fixed. The customer can only influence the wiring of the logics.
In modern semiconductor technologies, the preparation costs for gate array production are relatively high, while the pure production costs are low. Gate arrays are attractive for low-volume production; they can contain several million logic circuits.
