geographic information retrieval (GIR)

Geographic Information Retrieval(GIR) is a geographic information retrieval system that can be used to add location-based information to maps or city plans.

GIR techniques are used in geoweb and online map services to provide users with information about monuments, structures, buildings and mountains. However, they also support Location Based Services( LBS), which can be used to overlay location-based offers on city maps, or to overlay personal locations.

GIR systems blend semantic information into geographic coordinate systems. They separate the semantic information from the geographic information by indexing and encoding the texts and the geographic coordinates so that they can interact with the semantic content such as photos of buildings, keywords for hotels or cinemas.
