global user identifier (GUID)

The Global User Identifier (GUID) is a globally unique identification number( ID).

This mathematically generated identification is assigned only once and cannot be regenerated. The multi- digit GUI identification comprises 16 bytes or 128 bits, so it can have up to 36 digits and is probably unique due to its multi-digit nature.

The GUID is accepted across platforms and is used for the identification and registration of operating systems and programs, but also for components, central processing units or peripheral devices; it can be used for the unique identification of data objects and documents.

The Global User Identifier is implemented according to the UUID standards, Universal Unique Identifier.
