grain boundary
Grain boundaries are used for solar cells made of polycrystalline silicon.
Grain boundaries occur between the polycrystalline silicon surfaces and hinder the charge transport in solar cells. This reduces the efficiency compared to monocrystalline solar cells. Solar cells made of monocrystalline silicon therefore have a higher efficiency than those made of multicrystalline silicon.
