group address (GA)

Group addresses are multicast addresses in which the subscribers of a group are grouped together. Such logical addresses exist in telecommunications for certain telecommunications services such as the group call, the extended group call, for video conferences and serial faxes.

In addition, group addresses are used in network technology for transmission to end devices to address a cluster and also for broadcasting. Broadcast addresses exist for MAC addresses and also for IP addresses.

Also in field buses a field device group is addressed by a group address, likewise in home electronics where several lamps form a group that is addressed by a common address.
