gzip compression

The gzip file format is used to compress and decompressfiles. It is based on the deflate algorithm and is used in web communication between the browser and the web server.

The deflate algorithm used in gzip reduces the size of files so that they have less data size and can be transferred faster over networks. It is supported by web browsers and web servers. The web server compresses the files using gzip and then sends them to the web browser with an HTTP response, which decompresses them when it receives them.

The gzip file format is GNU software and can be used as a free program. The first version of gzip was introduced in 1992.
