high level compressor (acoustics) (HLC)

In audio technology and acoustics, limiters are used to protect amplifiers, loudspeakers, hearing aids and the people using them by limiting the maximum sound level to a certain level.

In acoustics, this can be the output sound pressure that could reach the pain threshold or the sound pressure in hearing aids. This limiting technique is called High Level Compressor ( HLC). With the HLC technique, the signal level is linearly amplified up to the limit value and is not compressed. At the limit value, the limiting circuit intervenes and compresses higher levels above this value. Thus, no level is reached that exceeds the limit level. In hearing aid technology, the HLC level can be adjusted and is usually between 80 dB and 90 dB.
