high speed study group (IEEE 802.3) (HSSG)

The Higher Speed Study Group (HSSG) is a working group of IEEE 802.3, in which the high-speed activities of Ethernet are concentrated: 10 Gigabit Ethernet ( 10GbE), 40 Gig abit Ethernet( 40GbE) and 100 Gigabit Ethernet( 100GbE).

Since the standardization of 10-Gigabit Ethernet through IEEE 802.3ae has been completed, the next decade of spectrum is 40-Gigabit Ethernet and 100-Gigabit Ethernet. These activities will be carried out under the project name 802.3ba and later by 802.3bm.

The need for corresponding data rates is in the data centers and campus area. In the data centers, 100 Gigabit technology will be introduced in the core area and in the aggregation area. Whereas the access technology of the data centers will make do with 10- gigabit Ethernet.

The technical work of the HSSG Group is characterized by certain specifications. These include duplex operation, Ethernet frame retention in terms of minimum and maximum frame length, adequate support for optical transport networks( OTN) with the MAC data rate of 40 Gbit/s and 100 Gbit/s, and the specified distances for multimode fibers, monomode fibers and copper cables.
