horn radiator

Horn radiators are used to radiate electromagnetic waves from waveguides. They form a widening, open waveguide at whose opening the electromagnetic waves are radiated into free space.

Since the waveguide has a different characteristic impedance than the free space, the horn radiator ensures the matching between the two characteristic impedances. Decisive for the characteristic impedance of the free space is the aperture size of the horn radiator.

Like waveguides, horn radiators can be rectangular or round. To avoid standing waves between the two components, they should be exactly the same shape and size. Horn radiators have a radiation pattern with a narrow beam angle and high return loss. The antenna gain of the horn radiator is about 20 dBi depending on the length.

It depends on the main lobe and thus directly on the length of the horn radiator. A doubling of the horn radiator length results in a doubling of the antenna gain. Horn radiators are used in microwave technology at 10 GHz and above.
